Amidst the continuing concerns about holding a major sports event during the pandemic, PON Papua 2021 ended on Friday (15/10/2021).

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and security issues from armed criminal groups, health volunteers and security forces are an important element behind the implementation of the 2021 Papua National Games.

Small-scale business owners and local administrations in Papua hoped that the reinvigoration of economic activities as a result of PON will not be momentary.

The existence of international-standard sports facilities in line with the National Games (PON) 2021 has brought new hope for the future sustainability of sports development in Papua.

Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali acknowledged that it was difficult to prevent crowds of spectators at PON Papua. Crowds mainly formed at venues where the Papuan people’s favorite sports were being held.

A total of 29 participants in the National Games are reported to have been infected with Covid-19, which has led to calls for heightened vigilance against widespread transmission by tightening health protocols.

Out of the four referees who were in charge of the match, three have the International Football Association Federation (FIFA) badges, namely "FIFA Referee" and "FIFA Assistant Referee", on their chests.

Papua Governor Lukas Enembe said he hoped that all infrastructure developed for the Games could become an opportunity for reviving Papua in all aspects, in both sports and economics.
