The Meaning of Independence
The majority of PNG\'s people was born after 1975, so they do not know life during the Australian colonial period. Moreover, most of the history lessons at their school are written by Australians.
In Papua New Guinea (PNG), Independence Day, which is celebrated every 16 September, is the countryโs most important holiday beside Christmas. Celebrations are held across the country, enjoying five days to two weeks of holidays.
I had the chance to experience PNG\'s independence celebrations in Suki, which is the regional government center in the middle of the Fly River. As the sun began to rise, about 300 villagers lined up to enter a field. Most of them were women, almost all barefoot.
