Politicians influence voters not with rational argumentation, but by stirring up collective sentiment. There with Islamophobia, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and immigration. Here with issues of ethnicity, religion, race or social group (SARA), economic crisis rhetoric and fearmongering. The phenomenon has become known as post-truth, a term the Oxford Dictionary chose as word of the year in 2016.
