The truth is important, but why does that need to be emphasized again? Lately, electoral democracy in America, Europe and also in Indonesia in this politically significant year has been filled with rhetoric not based on facts.

Politicians influence voters not with rational argumentation, but by stirring up collective sentiment. There with Islamophobia, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and immigration. Here with issues of ethnicity, religion, race or social group (SARA), economic crisis rhetoric and fearmongering. The phenomenon has become known as post-truth, a term the Oxford Dictionary chose as word of the year in 2016.
