The press corps commemorated the World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2023. The condition of the press has not improved yet. It is faced with challenges.

In Indonesia the struggle to achieve press freedom is certainly not easy. Violence remains a problem. Violence continues to threaten women and children. In short, the culture of violence still exists in this nation.

Freedom of the press has increased slightly but we shouldn’t become complacent. We still have to fight.

The role of journalism has become clear again. Keeping its flame burning is a challenge for journalists in this country who are also lovers of democracy and peace. It may not be extinguished.

Threats, terror, violence, criminalization, and even murder continue to threaten journalists. At a time when the black shadow of plague has not yet dissipated, a myriad of challenges have emerged.

The press, especially mainstream media, might reenter an era of legal uncertainties, and might even be trapped by other regulations.
