Vice President Ma'ruf Amin said there were three big challenges in organizing the PON in Papua. The first was the construction of a large sports arena to international standards.

West Java finished the Papua PON on Thursday (14/10/2021) with 133 gold medals, 105 silvers and 115 bronzes. The province outperformed Jakarta, which came in second place with 110 golds, 91 silvers and 100 bronzes.

The existence of international-standard sports facilities in line with the National Games (PON) 2021 has brought new hope for the future sustainability of sports development in Papua.

Indonesian athletes are also threatened with sanctions meaning they may not be allowed to fly the flag and carry the name of the country in events.
