Sandra was just about to get off the chair when the phone rang again. Marti reached for it and answered in a heavy voice, as if every word was a struggle.

Marti looked at herself in the mirror. Looked at the wrinkles in the corners of her eyes, mouth and neck. Sometimes, she used her fingers to pull her skin down. She smiled at herself.

Sandra placed her head on the table, covering her blank sheet of paper. Her eyes were open, as if she was looking at something, but inside her mind.

With eyes still half-closed Sandra opened the window. She heard the birds chirping on the rambutan tree. Then, to her mother's room, she opened the door, but immediately closed it again.
