The parking lots of two low-cost apartment buildings (rusunawa) stand empty on Thursday (22/8/2019) in the industrial area near Ungaran in Semarang regency, Central Java. The low-cost apartments prioritize tenancy for workers and offer public facilities like green spaces and a children\'s playground for residents. However, they have not been leased optimally among local factory workers, who consider the rental costs to be too high.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS β€” Efforts to provide adequate public housing are often hampered by increases in the price of land. The land shortage can be overcome by integrating public housing into urban planning and mass transportation developments.

The concept of vertical housing, or apartment complexes, can be a solution to providing affordable public housing. If public housing is developed only in areas with affordable land prices, urban development will be uneven and uncontrollable.
