Rescue Operation Hampered by Hard Terrain

Rescuers carry the body of a miner from an illegal gold mine that was buried by a landslide in Bakan village, Loyalan district, Bolaang Mongondow regency, North Sulawesi, on Thursday, Feb. 28. As of Thursday afternoon, 19 miners had been rescued, while the bodies of eight deceased miners had been recovered.

BOLAANG MONGONDOW, KOMPAS – Efforts to rescue the miners buried in an illegal gold mine that collapsed on Tuesday evening in Bakan village, Bolaang Mongondow regency, North Sulawesi, is being hampered by steep terrain and unstable soil and rock. By 8 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 28, 2019), 27 miners had been rescued in the manual operation.

The bodies of three other miners were found on Thursday. The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) records on Thursday evening showed that 8 of the 27 miners that were rescued during the first three days of the operation had died. The other 19 miners were found in relatively stable condition.
