President Joko Widodo (center), accompanied by National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Lt. Gen. Doni Monardo (left) and East Java Governor Soekarwo, hits kentongan (bamboo slit drums) to open the 2019 Disaster Management Coordination Meeting on Saturday (2/2/2019) at the JX International Surabaya in East Java. The President called on all attendees to improve efforts to mitigate disasters. The country experienced 366 disasters in the first month of the year that caused at least 94 deaths and dozens missing.

SURABAYA, KOMPAS – Spatial control is the main challenge in implementing the President\'s directives in reducing disasters in the future. Assertiveness is needed to enforce risk-based spatial planning, including the relocation of communities from the danger zone before a disaster occurs.

The problems were raised by a number of experts during a coordination meeting of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) in Surabaya on Sunday.
