Indonesia is an archipelago where each island also contains clusters of ethno-religious groups, with religion being the main factor of self-identification. Some are groups with their own territories, while others are urban communities.

The ethno-religious groups usually live separately. They marry within their own circles and live in their own communities as well. All of this is masked by an Indonesian identity with Pancasila as a balancing formula. However, there is a paradox; a dual-faceted identity: Indonesian identity fosters togetherness, while religious social practices tend to produce "differentiation" and consequently, differences as well.
