Taylor's Idea of Secularization in Indonesia
Charles Taylor's concept of secularization opened our eyes to the fact that religiosity and humanism can grow.
The word โsecularโ has become a taboo topic in Indonesia. Mainly by religious fundamentalists who believe that modernization and secularization born from Western society will eliminate religion and religiosity of Indonesian society. Some people also believe that secularization is contrary to Pancasila.
Due to this condition, Narwastuyati Petronela Mbeo has another view on secularization that she considers suitable for the situation in Indonesia. Naya, as she is called, sees that the secularization developed by Charles Taylor has been unknowingly practiced in Indonesia. Her views are summarized in a publication entitled Charles Taylor and The Challenge of Secularization for Indonesia (PBK, 2024) which wants to underline that secularization has occurred in Indonesia long before this country was founded, but it has not reduced its religiosity.
