Syrup-linked AKI Exposure Spreading
The widespread fatal acute kidney injury (AKI) cases among children in Indonesia have prompted the suspension of the sale of syrup-based medications, which are blamed for the spike in infant deaths.
JAKARTA, KOMPAS β Initial examinations and investigations by the Health Ministry have found that the atypical progressive acute kidney injury (AKI) in a number of children in Indonesia was due to their exposure to solvent substances in the syrup liquid they consumed.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday (21/10/2022), said that various examinations had been carried out to find the cause of the AKI, which appeared to have no link with pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria or parasites.
