Deaf People Struggle for Independence

Deaf people in Aceh province face an uphill struggle to be independent. They learn skills and open small businesses to make a living. Beyond this, they still need genuine support from the public.

Rizky Adly (27) a deaf people or teman tuli in Indonesian, is welding in his workshop in Kaju Village, Baitussalam District, Aceh Besar District, Aceh, Wednesday (12/10/2022).

Rizky Adly (27) skillfully measures and cuts an iron bar for assembling a cart. The terrace of his brother's house in Kajhu village, Baitussalam district, Aceh Besar Regency, Aceh province, has been transformed into a welding workshop. "I want to make a coffee cart," he said in writing when Kompas met him on Wednesday (12/10/2022).

Rizky, who is hearing impaired, owns a welding business he set up in early 2021 with the meager capital he had saved. Today, he depends on his welding business to survive.
