Officers carry out routine checks at the Ulumbu geothermal power plant (PLTP) in Wewo Village, Satar Mese District, Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Monday (4/10/2021). The Ulumbu PLTP in the city of Ruteng has been operating since 2012 with a capacity of 4x2.5 megawatts. (MW).

JAKARTA, KOMPAS β€” Efforts to optimize renewable energy sources into electric power are still hindered by storage technology through the medium of batteries. The reason is, not all power plants from renewable energy can operate for 24 hours. The development of renewable energy must also take into consideration the condition of supply and demand for electricity in a region.

Deputy Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara emphasized that the government continued to be committed to a target of zero carbon emissions by 2060 by optimizing renewable energy sources. However, the government is also aware of the construction of a fossil fuel power plant, which has a long contract with state electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN). "We respect the existing contract. Therefore, we developed what is called the energy transition," said Suahasil in his keynote speech in a webinar titled "Renewable Energy: A Supply-Demand Viewpoint, Tariff Affordability and Supply Reliability", on Thursday (21/10/2021).
