JAKARTA, KOMPAS – The emergence of regional judges lodging complaints with the Judicial Commission (KY) over the alleged collection of unofficial fees and fundraising indicates a pervasive lack of professionalism among judges across the nation. Outdated, bureaucratic habits in the judiciary pose a threat to judicial independence, that superiors and subordinates exist in the judicial structure that incline judges toward acceding to the wishes of their perceived superiors or of higher institutions.

Judicial Commission chairman Aidul Fitriciada Azhari said on Thursday (13/9/2018) in Jakarta that past problems in the judiciary concerned pervasive bureaucracy and government intervention. Consequently, the judges lacked independence and an egalitarian stance, as they had been forced to obey the government bureaucracy. The concept of superiors and subordinates thus persisted.
