Fighting against Anoa’s Extinction
“One kilo is Rp 50,000 [US$3.47],” the man said, citing the price of anoa meat in a traditional market in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, in early March. At the time, Kompas was pretending to be a potential buyer. The man promised that he would have the meat by the following week.
Wildlife protection organization ProFauna Indonesia’s record shows that anoa meat trade is rampant in North Sulawesi, despite the animal’s protected status. Anoa is often hunted by locals for its meat. Apart from anoa, the yaki or Sulawesi black monkey (Macaca nigra) is another Sulawesi endemic animal commonly hunted and traded.
