Amid the threat of trade war between the United States and China, influential newspaper China Daily and other big media simultaneously (on April 11 and in April editions) published calming reports. Using the momentum of the opening of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2018 (similar to the World Economic Forum, but initiated by China) in Hainan, President Xi Jinping presented his country as the anchor for global stability and the defender of a free and open trade regime.

The commitment of the Chinese government was clear: It wanted to open itself as broadly as possible by easing restrictions on its domestic market. It aimed to maintain global growth momentum. International Monetary Fund executive director Christine Lagarde, who attended the meeting, looked impressed and hailed China. It was clear China wanted to develop an antithesis to the US government’s stance.
