People cross the Lembeh Strait in North Sulawesi by boat on September 14, 2017.

Dusk was falling on Tuesday (12/9) when the Kompas team finished taking a break from diving at the Makawidey dive spot in the waters of Lembeh Strait in Bitung, North Sulawesi. In accordance with the diving plan, the team ended the day enjoying an underwater barongsai dance – or lion dance – performed by fish.

“The mandarin fish only emerge just before its gets dark,” said Efra Wantah, an environmental activist in Manado who, along with colleague Meyer Musa, accompanied the team in Bitung. Also accompanying the team was Ucu Yanu Arbi, head of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Oceanography Research Center (P2O LIPI) in Bitung.
