The Ariane 5 ECA VA235 rocket carrying the Telkom 3S satellite is launched in a facility owned by Arianespace in Kourou, France, Tuesday (14/2). The satellite, which has 42 satellite transponders, will orbit at 118 degrees east longitude or over Kalimantan to support the improvement of Telkom\'s communications network for high-definition television, cellular communication services and internet broadband.

The Telkom 1 satellite was launched from the Guiana Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, on August 12, 1999. The satellite, placed in a geostationary orbit above the Karimata Strait, replaced the B2R satellite.

The Telkom 1launch signified the return of the countryโ€™s satellite management under state-owned PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (Telkom), following the management of the Palapa satellites under Satelindo. Although it was designed with an operational life span of 15 years, it was still in operation in mid-August 2017. It was hoped the satellite would still in operation until 2022, when it would be replaced with the Telkom 4 satellite.
