Searching for Signs of Victory

The Jakarta gubernatorial election finally showed clear results. By 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, most survey agencies had collected 50 percent of their quick count data,and the results mostly pointed to a victory of Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno.

The indicated results remained relatively stable until the quick counts were completed. The final quick count from Kompas’ research and development division (Litbang Kompas) based on samples from400 polling stations at 5:15 p.m. showed that Anies-Sandi gained 58 percent of the vote against Basuki-Djarot’s 42 percent.

The Anies-Sandi ticket’s victory had already been indicated by the trend of survey results ahead of the election’s first round on February 15. The swift switch of support toward Anies-Sandi in the final weeks up to the first round of voting provided a strong indication that the pair would emerge victorious in the second round.
